Parkwood Underground Wine Cellar
A Masterpiece Below Ground

In Parkwood, Johannesburg, Greg Long Services took on the challenge of building a 25 m² underground wine cellar with a spectacular vaulted roof. The project required precision engineering from start to finish.

The work began with excavations reaching a depth of 5.5 metres, followed by the installation of a large reinforced concrete base — designed to prevent the cellar from floating in the event of rising groundwater.

Once complete, a temporary platform was constructed to allow for the concrete walls to be poured. Brickwork for the walls came next, leading to the most technically demanding element: the vaulted roof.

To achieve the perfect curve, rectangular steel tubing was rolled and custom-made into roof formers, providing the vault’s shape. Brickwork was laid directly onto these formers, then topped with steel-reinforced concrete to ensure exceptional strength — strong enough for traffic to pass freely above.

The result is a structure so robust it could likely withstand even the most severe impact. Inside, the cellar is equally impressive. The owner, Richard Grubb, a talented woodworker, built the wine racks himself, adding a personal touch to the project.

The final creation is a magnificent vaulted wine cellar — a blend of engineering skill and craftsmanship, and a perfect home for a collection of exceptional vintages.
